It was the last season of CR7 at Manchester United.Alex Ferguson (manger) and David Gill (Manchester United chief executive) both stated in May that Cristinao Ronaldo would stay at the club. On June 5, Sky Sport reported that CR7 had expressed an interest in moving to Real Madrid provided that Ream Madrid offered him same amount of money. A tampering complaint was filed by Manchester United with FIFA on 9 June over Madrid’s alleged pursuit of Ronaldo. FIFA declined to take any action.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo should be allowed to leave. He claimed it in July. United manager Alex Ferguson got annoyed by the comments. On 6 August, Ronaldo confirmed that he would stay at United for at least one year. He stated that he would play for United with all his heart and soul. CR7 underwent ankle surgery in Amsterdam on July 7, ruling him out for up to three months. On 17 September, he returned to action. Against Villarreal in UEFA Champions, he scored his first goal of the season in a 3-1 League Cup.

Ronaldo scored two goals three days later against Hull City in a 4-3 win. Ronaldo again scored a brace in a 5-0 win over Stoke City on Nov. 15, 2008. These were the goals being his 100th and 101st goals in all competitions for United. Both goals came from direct free kicks. Ronaldo received the third red card of his career on Nov. 30 when he was sent off for a second bookable offence against Manchester city for handball.

Ronaldo had an operation in the summer. It was the result of consistent tackling on him but CR7 was naturally brave. CR7 became United’s first Ballon d’Or recipient on 2 December. Ronaldo finished with 446 points, one hundred sixty five (165) of runner-up Messi. He said that day was one of his most beautiful days of life. In the Club World Cup, on December 18, Ronaldo scored in the 5-3 semi-final victory over Gamba Osaka. Manchester United beat LDU Quito 1-0 in the final.

Ronaldo was awarded with the Silver Ball (It is an award given to the second best player in the tournament). CR7 became the first Premier League player ever to be named the FIFA World Player of the Year on 12 July. He became the first Portuguese player to win the award since Luis Figo in the year 2001.

Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United scored two goals in a 5-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on 27 January. It happened before scoring a penalty in a 1-0 win against Everton four days later. On 21 February, CR7 again scored the winning goal with a free-kick which helped put United eight points clear at the top of the table.

On 25 April, as Manchester United came from 2-0 down at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-2 with CR7 scoring the first from the penalty spot and the crucial third goal. Ronaldo scored his final ever goal for United in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford with a free kick on 10 May. It put United 1-0 up. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Champions League goal of the season on 11 March.

CR7 hold the distinction of being the first player to win the FIFA Pukas Award in 2009. (It is an honor handed by FIFA to the best goal of the year). Ronaldo later called that it was the best goal he had ever scored in his career. CR7 scored two against Arsenal including a free kick from 39.1 yards in the semi final second leg. United advanced to the Champions League final where United received little impact being defeated by Barcelona. R7 finished with 53 appearances in all competitions which was four 4 higher than the previous year. He scored sixteen fewer goals than his career best total of forty two from the previous season of 2007-08. Ronaldo was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for a 4th successive year.

Manchester United accepted an offer of £80 million from Real Madrid for CR7 after it was revealed that he again had expressed his desire to leave Manchester United. The sale was fully condoned by Ferguson (Manager). When CR7 had eventually completed his transfer to Real Madrid, he expressed his gratitude towards Alex Ferguson for helping him develop as a play. Ronaldo expressed that Ferguson had been his father in sport. He had been one of the most important factors and most influential in his career.
